Working Women Wednesday: Shelby Costo

Working Women Wednesday is a weekly feature highlighting the hard-working, wonderful women within the Girl Gang. This week’s feature is the Owner of Sweet Costo, Shelby Costo.

Your Local Girl Gang: Tell us about your business. What is your mission statement? When did you launch?

Shelby Costo: I run a popup & workshop based pastry studio that specializes in pairing & infusing desserts with alcohol. My mission is to open your mind & palate to the vast world of flavors found in your favorite sweets & spirits. I launched Sweet Costo in 2016, just before my 21st birthday.

YLGG: When and how did the idea for your business come to you?

SC: The idea came to me when I was 15 after visiting a coffee shop in Savannah, Georgia, that was a bar at night. They had a display case with cakes & cookies and I couldn’t stop thinking about how cool it would be to match the desserts to the drinks.

YLGG: What is the best piece of business advice you have received?

SC: No one knows what the vision in your head was, so don’t beat yourself up when things don’t turn out exactly as you had imagined. You will forget something or miss a deadline at some point but it’s how you react in that situation that defines you as a business woman.

YLGG: What characteristic do you admire in other entrepreneurial women?

SC: I really admire when women are supportive, especially of women within their field. Cleveland has such a beautiful group of female entrepreneurs in this way, everyone collaborates and lifts up each other’s business whenever possible.

YLGG: What piece of advice you would give to women starting their own businesses?

SC: Nothing will come of nothing but anything could come of something. Whatever it is your hesitating on, just go for it (as long as you’re not risking your life savings or anything, check in with someone before you do that!).

YLGG: Name a woman, past or present, who you admire.

SC: I’ve admired Gwen Stefani since I was little, she just has such a defined sense of style and has never seemed concerned with fitting in. I really took that approach to heart when starting my business and wasn’t afraid to go for a completely different aesthetic than most baking accounts; that’s what has made Sweet Costo memorable.
